From chaos to syntropic farming
A bridge between entropy, spirituality (meaning and purpose), energy (what flows and nourishes processes), and farming systems (how we care for the land so it produces and is reborn).

Syntropy changed the way I see the world… and myself.
ENTROPY: EVERY SYSTEM TENDS TOWARD DISORDER
We live in a world that, if left to its own devices, if we simply stand by and do nothing, tends toward disorder. Things break, an abandoned house deteriorates, the body wears down, the mind grows noisy, and relationships become strained. This is not because something is working "wrong" in us or in the universe: it is a natural process. This is how matter behaves on our planet, and even in our own minds.
In physics, this is called entropy: every material system that does not receive energy in a conscious and directed way tends toward disorder — toward dispersion, toward loss of structure. In short, everything tends toward chaos. In the material world, it is simply easier for things to move toward disorder than toward order. Have you ever dropped something and watched it shatter? The break happens in an instant. Repairing it, on the other hand, can take hours — or may not even be possible.
But take heart — there is another force at play.
SYNTROPY: ENERGY FLOWS WHERE ATTENTION IS DIRECTED
When we activate an inner order, a direction, something changes. In the energetic world, there exists syntropy: the tendency of life to organise itself, to create form, connection, and function. Where there is life — or conditions for life — patterns emerge, cooperation arises, cycles take shape. A movement appears toward order, toward integration, toward coherence.
HOW CAN I BEGIN TO PRACTISE IT?
In human beings, we can observe this when we meditate, when we practise pranayama — the ancient yogic discipline of consciously controlling the breath to master vital energies. The brain, the heart, and the various systems of the body begin to synchronise, to work with awareness, entering into harmony. Energy flows without blockages, with less noise.
In nature, we see it in the formation of a tree, born from a small seed, where energy moved in a coherent, precise, and integrated way to eventually create that entire living structure. Every system within that seed worked in the same direction, with coherence and well-directed energy. A forest "knows" how to cover the soil, create a microclimate, and sustain biodiversity. It is not magic: it is available and directed energy, biological information, and interrelationships that continuously strengthen one another.
In agroecosystems managed under the principle of syntropy, the goal is precisely to favour that tendency. To create more syntropy.
Through awareness accompanied by intention and practice, we seek to capture more light, more photosynthesis, more leaf surface across different strata, transform it into biomass, and return it to the soil. In doing so, we increase fertility, activate biological processes, and improve water retention. In essence, we transform available energy into living structure: energy stops dispersing and begins to organise life.
To achieve this, we work with biological succession, the natural developmental stages of a landscape, selecting species that cooperate with one another, stratification (plants of different heights and ecological functions), and continuous soil cover. Why is soil cover so important? When you plant a tree, the surrounding soil is often left exposed and bare. In syntropic systems, that bare ground is an open invitation to disorder: erosion, opportunistic plant colonisation, water stress, and thermal extremes.
In my experience working with syntropic systems in both the temperate grasslands of Argentina and the agricultural landscapes of Switzerland, bare soil is always the first signal that a system is losing energy rather than building it. Covering the soil, with living plants, with mulch, with ramial chipped wood, is the first concrete act of syntropy in any farm.
Without needing to agree on any particular belief system, there is a shared experience: directed energy and intentional management produce measurable biological responses.
In a syntropic system, that attention becomes concrete and physical. Observing the landscape. Reading the soil. Understanding the cycles. Intervening at the right moment — pruning, managing, accompanying — and returning energy in the form of biomass and care. That reciprocity can feel like a spiritual practice: being present and acting in favour of life.
Syntropy applied to agriculture is not a promise of ease. It demands significant energy at the outset, discipline, constant decision-making, and purposeful action. It is about actively collaborating with life's own tendency to organise itself.
And along that path, I discovered something more: it is also possible to find order within myself — even knowing that, many times, we will still feel the full weight of entropy.
